Which ruleset fits my group?
Agree on two choices before character creation
Write down the ruleset and faction for the group. Saying only Alliance or only PvP leaves half of the compatibility check unanswered.
Choose the risk and community conventions you want
Normal emphasizes optional PvP; PvP adds open-world danger. Roleplay variants add naming and behavior expectations. Choose those conventions deliberately rather than treating every listing as an interchangeable server.
Check language settings separately
Preferred Online Language is account-wide under Options > System > Languages and Social. Its 24-hour cooldown concerns that preference; it does not transfer a character between rulesets.
Worked examples
Two friends choose Alliance; one selects Normal and one PvP.
They do not meet the same-ruleset requirement for an ordinary group.
A matching faction alone is insufficient. Confirm both choices before creating the characters.
Two characters choose Normal; one is Horde and the other Alliance.
They do not meet the same-faction grouping requirement.
A shared ruleset does not remove the faction boundary.
You changed Preferred Online Language and want to change it again immediately.
The documented preference has a 24-hour cooldown.
That setting changes the language preference, not faction or ruleset; it cannot repair a mismatch in either.
Make the choice for the session you want to have
A player who wants uninterrupted questing with occasional chosen PvP has a different requirement from someone who wants contested travel. Roleplaying adds community expectations on top of the relevant combat environment. Discuss those ordinary situations with friends instead of choosing only from a launch-popularity rumor.
Hardcore is a later option rather than an available launch fallback. Do not promise a specific release date where Blizzard has not supplied one. A future Hardcore plan should not be confused with a character already created in a normal ruleset.
Do not confuse grouping, battlegrounds and moving a character
The normal party and guild boundary is same ruleset and faction. The official battleground exception has its own scope and is not permission for cross-ruleset dungeon groups. A language preference also does not bridge that boundary.
Moving between rulesets is intentionally limited. The ordinary way to play another ruleset is a character there, not a free toggle on the existing character. The stated Hardcore death transfer goes outward and is a special case. Recheck creation restrictions and any newer official rule before making a permanent group plan.
Activity
| Details | Reason | PvP |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | Learning, questing and cooperative play. | Opt-in |
| PvP | Players who actively want open-world conflict. | Risk of opposing-player attacks in much of the open world. |
| Roleplay | An immersive character and community focus. | Normal-style choice with roleplay naming and behavior conventions. |
| Roleplay-PvP | Players who want both community conventions and open-world conflict. | PvP risk with roleplay naming and behavior conventions. |
| Hardcore | A later, separate high-stakes ecosystem. | — |
Compare
- May mix rulesets except the separate Hardcore ecosystem.
- Create a character on the other ruleset.
- A dead Hardcore character may transfer out, including to PvP.
- One faction's characters on the PvP ruleset.
- The official text groups PvP rulesets generally but names PvP for this restriction; recheck the actual creation screen for the variant.

Common questions
Can two rulesets run dungeons together?
No. The official grouping boundary is the same ruleset and faction.
Is Roleplay-PvP available at launch?
Yes. The current official ruleset and starter pages include it among launch choices.
Is Hardcore available at launch?
No. The official pages place it after launch without a specific date.
Do matching factions guarantee my friends can join me?
Not by themselves. You also need the same ruleset for the ordinary grouping activities described by Blizzard.
Can a language preference move my character to another ruleset?
No. It is a separate account-wide preference with a 24-hour change cooldown.
Does the battleground exception allow cross-ruleset dungeon groups?
No. The official exception is about battlegrounds, not ordinary dungeon or raid grouping.
Can I freely toggle an existing character between Normal and PvP?
No free ongoing switch is documented. Plan a new character for another ruleset unless a specific official exception applies.
